Bonnie Wright

I am excited to bring my life experience in parenting, supporting neurodivergent individuals, and working in educational helping roles into my work as a counsellor. I feel proud to have transitioned into a career I have always been passionate about, and I am committed to supporting individuals as they explore and strengthen their mental health. I am comfortable supporting individuals from all walks of life with a wide range of presenting concerns and am particularly passionate about supporting parents and families and relational matters, those with life transitions, individuals with ADHD and autism, and women experiencing menopause. I place strong value on relationship-building within the counselling process and strive to create a safe, comfortable space where clients feel heard, understood, and respected. I am also interested in continuing to develop my skills in narrative, cognitive behavioural, and family systems approaches, and integrating these modalities into my practice in meaningful and client-centered ways.

What led you to counselling?

My family says I have been playing the role of a counsellor for them all my life. I have always been someone that others have turned to for a sympathetic ear and I have held many roles at work where I help others. I have worked with adults at a psychiatric group home, I have been an Educational Assistant and a behavioural consultant. These roles have shown me I can support and walk alongside others who need support. My desire to become a professional counsellor has grown stronger in the last few years and I finally took the leap to commit to schooling that would lead me to fulfill my dream of becoming a professional counsellor.

Favourite book and why?

I like a lot of books for different reasons. Two of my standout books are Grief Is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter and Still Life by Sarah Winman. I found the portrayal of relationships in both books very moving. Max Porter writes a very unique novel about the impact of grief on a family and Sarah Winman writes some of the most touching and heartfelt relationships that I have ever read.

What/who inspires you?

My own children inspire me and have been teaching me many lessons over the last twenty-five years. They each have their own outlook on the world and by watching them grow, I am inspired to view the world not only from my own perspective but through their eyes as well.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I feel I went through different phases of what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was not a child that had one career path in mind at a young age. I don’t think everyone knows what they want to do in the future and by changing careers at my current age, I am proof that our desires for careers can evolve over time.

What is your process for turning a bad day into a good one?

If I am having a bad day, I reach out to one of my family members to talk, cry or laugh and always feel better afterwards. I find going to the beach makes me feel calm, and I often use music to lift my mood as well. When I find the right song to match my mood, I find music very healing. Sometimes a song can pick you up, while at other times you need to listen to the sad song to let the emotions out and then you feel better.

What do people say your biggest strength is?

People generally say I am able to handle most situations that come up without getting too flustered. People often comment that I ‘handle things well’ and I feel that I can bring that capable energy into my work as a counsellor. I have been told I bring genuine empathy to relationships and that I am a kind and accepting person to work with.

Something you’re proud of?

I am proud of beginning a new career later in life and following my long-held interest in becoming a counsellor because I want to assist others on their mental health journeys. I have felt called to this profession but finally found the time to commit to the schooling needed and I dedicated myself to my Masters program while also working fulltime.

One thing you’ve learned from working with people?

Working with people has taught me that building strong relationships is the key to working well together. I find that being a supportive and caring person nurtures an effective working relationship and sets the tone for the way we can accomplish goals.

Favourite things to do?

I enjoy reading, walking in nature, swimming in the ocean and spending time with my family. I love to crochet and buy yarn and have many works in progress at my house at any time. I also spend a lot of time listening to music and love to see live music shows.

What would you tell a client who is meeting you for the first time?

I would tell a client that I am fully committed to working together with them in our counselling sessions if they decided they would like to work with me. I would want a client to know that I am supportive, accepting and kind. I would tell a client that they are the most knowledgeable person about their own life and that I am willing to learn about them in an unbiased and positive way.

Do you have any pets?

I have a loveable, goofy rescue dog named Andie. She is a spoiled member of our family who love cuddles and belly rubs. Andie loves people food, wants to be everyone’s best friend and makes me laugh every day.
