Improve Your Mental Health

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

We offer cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help you overcome negative thoughts and behaviours that may be holding you back from living the life you deserve. Our team of experienced therapists is committed to providing you with a supportive and compassionate environment where you can explore your feelings and find the tools you need to make lasting changes.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a form of talk therapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are interconnected and that by changing our thoughts, we can change our behaviours and ultimately improve our mental health.

CBT is a goal-oriented therapy that focuses on specific issues that are negatively impacting your life. It is a structured, time-limited therapy that typically lasts between 12-20 sessions. The therapy is highly effective for treating a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

At Skylark Counselling, we use evidence-based CBT techniques to help our clients make lasting changes. We believe that every individual is unique and tailor our approach to meet the specific needs of each client.

How Does CBT Work?

CBT is a collaborative process between the therapist and client. It involves identifying negative thoughts and behaviours and developing strategies to change them. CBT is a highly structured therapy that involves the following steps:

  1. Identify Negative Thoughts: The first step in CBT is to identify negative thoughts or beliefs that may be contributing to your mental health issues. Your therapist will work with you to identify these thoughts and help you to challenge and change them.
  2. Develop New Thoughts and Behaviours: Once negative thoughts and beliefs have been identified, your therapist will work with you to develop new, positive thoughts and behaviours that can replace the negative ones.
  3. Practice New Thoughts and Behaviours: CBT is an active therapy that requires you to practice new thoughts and behaviours outside of therapy sessions. Your therapist will provide you with homework assignments and support to help you practice the skills you learn in therapy.
  4. Monitor Progress: Throughout your CBT sessions, your therapist will monitor your progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan as necessary.

What to Expect in a CBT Session

During your first CBT session, your therapist will spend time getting to know you and understanding your concerns. They will ask you questions about your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to help identify the negative patterns that are impacting your life.

Based on your unique needs, your therapist will then develop a customized treatment plan that outlines the goals of therapy and the techniques that will be used to achieve them. CBT is a highly structured therapy, and your therapist will work with you to develop a roadmap for your treatment.

In subsequent sessions, you will work with your therapist to identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviours. You will learn new skills and techniques to help you manage your emotions and cope with difficult situations.

CBT is an active therapy, and you will be expected to complete homework assignments and practice the skills you learn in therapy between sessions. Your therapist will provide you with feedback and support as you work towards your treatment goals.
