Reunification Therapy
Need support rebuilding family relationships?
What is Reunification Therapy?
Reunification therapy supports children and caregivers in repairing relationships after a period of disruption or disconnection.
This can happen in the context of:
- Separation or divorce
- High-conflict co-parenting
- A long period of absence
- A breakdown in trust or attachment
- Situations where a child is resistant to contact
- Court involvement or legal recommendations
At its core, this work is not about pushing a child to “go along with” contact or reconnect quickly.
It is about understanding what is getting in the way of connection and working through that with care, honesty, and emotional safety.

Our Approach
At Skylark Counselling, we approach reunification therapy through a relational, trauma-informed, and developmentally attuned lens.
We hold a few things at the centre of this work:
- Children’s responses, even when they’re intense, confusing, or hard to sit with, are meaningful.
- Resistance doesn’t come out of nowhere
- Caregivers are often carrying their own layers of hurt, grief, or frustration into the process
- Repair takes more than time together—it takes consistency, safety, and a willingness to do things differently
Our role is to create a space where:
- Children don’t feel pressured to “perform” connection
- Caregivers feel supported—but also gently challenged where it matters
- Interactions can be slowed down, guided, and repaired in real time
We move at a pace that reflects readiness, not urgency, as rushing this process usually does the opposite of what people are hoping for.
Who This Work May Be For
Reunification therapy may be helpful if:
- A child is avoiding or refusing contact with a parent
- There has been a significant rupture in the relationship
- Attempts at reconnecting haven’t gone well—or have made things feel worse
- Ongoing co-parenting challenges are impacting the child
- A legal or court process has recommended therapeutic involvement
- If you’re unsure whether this fits your situation, that’s okay! We can figure that out together.
Our Philosophy
We don’t believe relationships repair through pressure, or that time alone fixes disconnection.
- ✓ People feel understood, not overridden
- ✓ Accountability without blame or shame
- ✓ Emotional safety is built gradually
- ✓ Small shifts are consistently followed through on
Reunification is not about going back to how things were.
It is about building something more stable, intentional, and honest moving forward.
Our role is to walk alongside you with clarity and care.
