Treatment for ADHD
Living with a neurodivergent brain can be supported and effectively managed with a combination different tools, therapies and sometimes medication.
Medication:
Stimulants and non-stimulants are medications that can help alleviate symptoms of ADHD. These medications work by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that are involved in attention and impulse control. Our therapists can work with you and your doctor to help you find the medication that works best for you.
Therapy:
Therapy can help individuals with ADHD develop strong strategies and skills that can help them understand and work with their symptoms to enhance their lives. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that has been shown to be particularly effective for ADHD. CBT helps individuals with ADHD identify negative thought patterns and develop more positive ways of thinking. It also helps individuals with ADHD develop organizational and time-management skills.
Individual Therapy for ADHD
Individual therapy is an essential component of ADHD counselling, as it provides clients with a safe and supportive environment to explore their thoughts, feelings, and presence. Our counsellors use evidence-based approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to help clients develop self-awareness, improve self-esteem, and learn effective coping strategies. Through individual therapy, clients can gain a better understanding of how their ADHD affects their daily life and work towards developing practical solutions to manage their symptoms.
Family Counselling for ADHD
Family therapy is another crucial aspect of ADHD counselling, as it helps clients and their families to develop better communication and relationship skills. ADHD can put a strain on family dynamics, as individuals with neurodivergent brains may struggle communicating their lived experience. Our family counselling sessions are designed to help families learn how to support each other effectively and develop strategies to manage ADHD symptoms within the family unit.
Behavioural Supports
Behavioural interventions are also an essential part of the counselling journey, as they help clients develop practical skills to manage their symptoms. Our counsellors use evidence-based techniques such as behavioural modification and coaching to help clients develop self-regulation skills, improve organizational skills, and build self-esteem.
Assessments
Getting a formal assessment can be helpful with medication support or with family communication and further understanding into ourselves. We partner with Adult ADHD Centre in North Vancouver, they provide assessments and diagnoses as well as medication support if needed.
