With a PhD in Clinical Psychology, Marzieh is an expert in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Transactional Analysis for both couples and individuals. She has over 21 years counselling experience developing programs for people struggling with mental illness, couple’s conflicts, and familial trauma. She is fluent in Farsi, Afghan, and English, and has worked in both private and non-profit organizations.

A little bit more about me

Specialities

I am fluent in Farsi, Afghan, and English and specialize in providing care to people in their first language so they are better able to process their emotions as opposed to focusing on translating their words. I also understand cultural and societal norms and expectations that are associated with these specific cultures.

Education?

I obtained a PhD in Personality Psychology from Armenian-Yeravan, Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from India-Pune, and Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Iran-Tehran.

Professional Clinical Counselling Certification

I’m certified and registered with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counselling and my Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) number is 17527. I am bound by their ethical guidelines and am held responsible to maintain continuing education annually throughout my career in order to provide the best care possible to my clients.

What do people say your biggest strength is?

I have always been told how I am creative and flexible I am. I understand life is unpredictable, and I am adaptable to ever-changing challenges as our lives are constantly changing and transforming. I’m also a persistent problem solver. I work very hard find new ways of looking at things specific to each of my client’s needs, and I am very determined to give them the best therapy possible.

Something you’re proud of (challenge you’ve overcome, etc.)?

I stand true to my values. I’m an independent person, and at the same time, I embrace my relationships with loved ones. I honor commitment, braveness and generosity throughout my life and am constantly striving to reflect and grow from every experience I have.

One thing you’ve learned from working with people?

Everyone is all from different walks of life and we are all looking for solutions to issues we are struggling with. Elements such as hope, motivation, and trust are essential in navigating these challenges, and I draw inspiration from my clients over the years in building and fostering these strengths in both myself and others.

What led you to counselling?

I had a strong desire and motivation to help and assist people with the challenges of daily living since I started going to counselling when I was in high school. I decided to study and continue my education in Clinical Psychology, so I was able to further support people to the best of my abilities. I have always been told that I am a patient listener, empathetic, and confidant. I’m grateful to be a successful therapist.

Favorite quote?

We cannot change anything unless we accept it. – Carl Jung. I believe that if we view others and ourselves in a negatively light, it builds up walls between people and within ourselves which hinder our search for peace. Acceptance can become a powerfully transformative mentality.

Favorite book and why?

Since I have always been interested in knowing more and more about how humans think and why, I have been following and reading pioneers of Psychoanalysis such as Jung, Eric Berne, and Robert Johnson. Their books like The Games People Play and Owning Your Own Shadow are understandable and relatable to a diverse audience.

What/who inspires you?

I’m inspired by nature: going for a walk outside, practicing mindfulness or yoga in a nearby park, allow me to feel grounded and calm. I’m also inspired by parents and teachers. For me, my whole life of cumulative events have inspired me to continuously reflect and grow. All of life’s challenges have contributed to teaching me resiliency, being patient, and forgiveness.

Favorite things to do:

Walking, yoga and reading books are some of my favorite things I do for self-care. I also love music, dance, and love being out in nature.

What would you tell a client who is meeting you for the first time?

In my opinion, first and foremost, self-awareness or recognizing one’s true self is the most important step for any client to take. I’m very gentle and I work together with clients to learn more about who they really are, while highlighting unique strengths that people may not see when in the middle of a crisis or challenge.
