Abby Wong

Abby holds a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology and has experience working with a diverse range of client populations, including children, adolescents, and adults. Her background in supporting individuals at crisis lines, hospices, and schools has provided Abby with the opportunity to provide help to people experiencing a range of challenges and stressors, including anxiety, grief, depression, and various traumas. Abby has supported a wide range of children, youth, and families and has the ability to provide clients with both in-person as well as virtual counselling services.

A little bit more about me

Education?

I received my Master of Education degree in Counselling Psychology from Simon Fraser University (SFU). I also completed my Bachelor’s degree at SFU, with a Major in Psychology and a Minor in Counselling & Human Development. In addition to working as a therapist with Skylark, I am also currently in the process of completing the teacher education program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) so that I may provide counselling services within the public school system in the future.

What do people say your biggest strength is?

The people in my life have often commented on their appreciation for the way I can listen to them and hold space for their emotions. I have been told that I am loyal and will always show up for the people in my life.

Something you’re proud of (challenge you’ve overcome, etc.)?

Working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. There was something very anxiety-inducing about having to suddenly adapt and translate my skills in a way that I never thought would be necessary. With that being said, going through this experience allowed me to develop skills for the online counselling world and reach clients who may have otherwise not been able to receive counselling, which are both very positive outcomes!

One thing you’ve learned from working with people?

Every time someone chooses to share a piece of their life story with me, I gain greater appreciation for the challenges and stressors people have not only faced in their lives, but have overcome! People sometimes forget to take the time to recognize the strength that is involved in overcoming their challenges, but I believe each individual should take pride in getting through a tough situation, no matter how “big” or “small”!

What led you to counselling?

Ever since I was in elementary school, there was never a question about what I wanted to do in my life, career-wise, other than counselling. I have witnessed from my clients, friends, family, and from my own experience what a positive difference counselling can make in people’s lives. No job in my life has been more rewarding than this one and I am grateful that I get to be a part of this career field.

What/who inspires you?

The children, youth, and adults with whom I have counselled, worked, and volunteered. I am continually blown away by people’s courage to be honest, vulnerable, and open about their lives. That is not an easy thing to do! I truly learn something new from each person I have come across in my career, and one of my favourite parts about this job is not only walking alongside clients as they learn about themselves, also learning alongside with them.

Favorite things to do:

I love to hike, camp, and be outside in the mountains as much as I can. I usually find myself most content when I am outdoors (and we live in a wonderful place to do so). Painting, drawing, and art in general have always been an important part of my life as well, and I am currently trying to invest more time into nurturing these hobbies!

What would you tell a client who is meeting you for the first time?

Any client should feel good about the counsellor they are speaking to. Fit is important! I would want you to know that you can ask me all the questions you need to in order to make sure I am the right counsellor for you. Also know that you can take counselling at a pace that feels right for you – I will be here with you every step of the way.
